biodegradable nylon - AMNI SOUL ECO®

biodegradable nylon - AMNI SOUL ECO®

What is Amni Soul Eco®?
Amni Soul Eco® is the polyamide yarn with enhanced biodegradability, developed and produced by Solvay and distributed by FULGAR.
As demonstrated by laboratory biodegradation tests in accordance with ASTM D5511*, Amni Soul Eco® biodegrades in around 5 years when disposed of in landfills, compared to more than 50 years for synthetics in general.
Amni Soul Eco® reduces the environmental impact and the amount of waste left to future generations.
*Standard Test Method for Determining Anaerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Materials Under High-Solids Anaerobic -Digestion Conditions (equivalent to ISO 15985).

Why is Amni Soul Eco® sustainable? How does it help the environment?
Every product at the end of its usable life, when it is disposed of as waste, produces an impact on the environment. Products that are not biodegradable, more specifically, do not decompose after they have been landfilled, which of course is extremely detrimental in environmental terms. On the other hand, products with enhanced biodegradability, such as Amni Soul Eco®, have a limited environmental impact because, after landfilling, they are turned into organic matter (biomass) and biogas which can become new resources for the environment, as well as being used for combined heat and power production.

How does it work? What are the necessary conditions for its biodegradation?
The chemical structure of synthetic fibres, generally speaking, does not allow for bacterial penetration, which makes the degradation process more complex and slower. Amni Soul Eco®, on the other hand, is produced using enhanced polyamide, which – under landfill conditions – facilitates access and digestion of waste material by bacteria, thus accelerating the biodegradation process.

What happens if a consumer disposes of the product incorrectly?
In an outdoor environment, Amni Soul Eco® is inert and decomposes slowly. Therefore, if a garment produced using Amni Soul Eco® is disposed of incorrectly, it is advisable to collect it and send it to recycling or biodegradation in a landfill.

Since it is biodegradable, is it not likely to smell or deteriorate after use? Is it possible that it could attract bacteria which might cause diseases in its users?
The biodegradation properties of Amni Soul Eco® become apparent only and exclusively under landfill conditions, where there is no oxygen and bacteria specifically in charge of anaerobic decomposition are found. Therefore it does not decompose after standard use and this product’s lifecycle is the same as that of traditional polyamide yarns.

Is this product free of toxic substances?
Yes, definitely. Amni Soul Eco® is indeed Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class 1 certified, to guarantee the absence of substances which could harm the health of adults, children and babies. Oeko-Tex is actually the independent control and certification system which certifies the safety of textile products for human use.

Which is the Technical requirement for Amni Soul Eco® Brand license (in order to receiving hangtags)?
Textiles products must meet the following requirements for brand licensing: more than 50% of Amni Soul Eco® in the total weight composition, and less than 15% of non biodegradable materials in the total weight composition.
